In 1974 4449 was removed from static display
in Portland and rebuilt. It was then painted up in the red, white and blue
scheme and from 1975-1976 it pulled the Freedom Train. This train toured the
United States and carried with it numerous historical documents and artifacts
of U.S. history that the public was able to view in the specially designed
cars. This was a magnificent, and moving, train to see out on the lines. After
the Bicentennial was over this locomotive was painted back into traditional
Daylight livery and is still running today.
